Flat screen televisions are designed to be easily mounted on the wall or even over the fireplace. The first step is to decide on placement. Try sitting or standing in several different places to see how your view would be while watching.

Use the box your TV was in to cut a cardboard piece the same size as the set. Tack it or tape it to the wall where you are planning to place the TV. Check to see if this is truly the spot you are going to want it.

The screws for the wall mounts need to go into studs. If they are just placed into sheet-rock they will work their way free in no time. Usually, studs are spaced 16 inches apart. If you cannot locate them, you can purchase an economical stud finder. Make a mark somehow when you have located the studs you need.

Select mounting brackets with care. There are many different types, and not all will work with all sets. At minimum, you will need to know the size of the screen and the manufacturer. You might also need the model number to find the right mounts.

You might want to purchase swivel mounts if you need to change the viewing angle from left to right. You may have to mount the TV directly opposite the sofa, but an overstuffed chair may be your favorite spot to sit. If you have the ability to swivel the screen, you can sit where you like and still see clearly.

After you have selected a location and wall mounts, you can mount the TV. Line up the screw holes in the back bracket so that they are over studs. Make sure the mount is level and mark where you will need to place the screws. Attach the mount to the wall and double check that it is still level. Attach the other brackets to the TV and slide the screen into position. Make sure the set is centered before tightening the screws along the track bottom.

While it sounds difficult to hang flat screen televisions, it truly is not if you watch the details. Just decide on where the set needs to go, align the bracket screws with studs, and check that it is all level. Then just sit back and tune in your favorite show.
