If a Walt Disney World visit is planned for your family this year, like many folks, you may be trying to see how you can avoid spending a fortune while there. The good news is that there are many inexpensive…and free…ways to stretch your dollars, have fun, and actually have an affordable Disney vacation. Whether it is things to do, or souvenirs to bring home, here are 10 ways to maximize the magic and minimize the cost.

1. Be sure to visit the Disney resorts. Each has an interesting theme that can be fascinating to explore. Of special note is the Animal Kingdom Lodge with it’s own set of animals that roam free just under the guest room balconies. You can check out the animal observation areas for a closer look.

2. Spend an afternoon or evening at Disney’s Boardwalk, where you will arcade games and activities just like at the beach.

3. Ride the monorail. It’s a must do on every vacation we have at Disney World.

4. Did you know you can ride a Segway? The more expensive version of this would be one of the several Segway tours, but for free, you can have a mini lesson and the corresponding photo op at Epcot’s Innoventions.

5. You don’t have to be extravagant for souvenirs, in fact some of the best souvenirs are the cheapest. Pressed pennies, postcards, pencils, and pins are all very inexpensive and are perfect for those kids who love collecting things.

6. You probably already realize that character autographs are huge, but consider a way to turn them into a souvenir that your kids will really treasure. Tee shirts, hats, posters, cards, and even pillowcases are fun when decorated with character autographs. Make sure to give the characters a sharpie so the autograph lasts.

7. Think pins! Though this can end up being expensive if you are not careful, by starting small and setting a budget, this can be a fun….and possibly addicting…..hobby for your kids and you.

8. For an international flavor to your souvenirs, have your children stop at each of the World Showcase countries at Epcot to do the KidCot fun stop activities. They’re fun, they’re educational, and best of all, they make great, free souvenirs.

9. Don’t overlook the pools. Your hotel will probably have one, and even if you have a vacation home, you will probably have one as well. Be sure to take advantage of it! Especially in the summer, a few hours relaxing at the pool each day can do wonders for both kids and grownups.

10. Stop to smell the roses….literally! We have visited Walt Disney World more than 10 times and on each visit we discover something new to us! Disney World is a truly fascinating place, and if you can take a few minutes each day to appreciate those little details, your trip will be that much more enjoyable. Promise!

With a little thought, you will be able to make the most of your time, money, and experiences, and actually have an extremely affordable Disney vacation. And the best thing about that is those magical memories you create will not break the bank in the process.
