The Front Page: First filming of the Hecht-MacArthur play is strainful, ludicrous, and flamboyantly prompted. This version stands up relatively well alongside the redo. Protocal: In Protocal Goldie Hawn becomes an inadvertent heroine (and ovemight star) who’s satisfied with her do nothing government job. She eventually is used as a pawn for handling a Middle Eastern potentate. Cast includes Goldie Hawn, Chris Sarandon, Richard Romanus, Andre Gregory, Gail Strickland, Cliff De Youthful, Keith Szarabajka, Ed Begley, Jr., and James Staley. (96 minutes, 1984)
The Guru: Harmless comedy in reference to an Indian dance professor (Mistry) who comes to America desiring popularity and fortune in the movie industry. As an alternative, he lands a job in a porno film, is befriended by its gorgeous megastar (who’s truly an “excellent gal” leading a triple life), then accidentally gets to be a star as the “expert of sex.” Some ludicrous gags, a likable leading guy, and excellent joke performances by Graham and Tomei improve this choppy feel-good flick. The House of Yes: On a stormy day in 1983, a youthful gentleman brings his fiancee home to meet his broken Washington, D.C, family, containing his demented twin sis, Jackie-O, whose fantasies in Jacqueline Kennedy have lengthened to the point ofreinacting the JFK assassination-with live bullets. Well made black comedy, based on the stage production by Wendy MacLeod. Cast includes Parker Posey, Josh Harnilton, Tori Spelling, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Genevieve Bujold, and Rachael Leigh Cook.
